Maher: ‘Left and right’ need to stop getting outraged over ‘every little thing’

Maher discusses 'shock and outrage', phony apologies

On last night’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher expanded upon his recent Op Ed piece in the New York Times asking “on the left and the right in this country” to stop asking each other to apologize over “every little thing.”

It was the last rule in the weekly “New Rules” segment, and in it, the comedian and host let fly not just at Hank Williams, Jr., but also at the liberals who expect anything but drivel to come out of Hank Williams, Jr.’s mouth. He made a list of the various things that everyone has been “outraged” about in recent memory.

“In the last few years,” he said, “we have been shocked and outraged by the unbelievable insensitivity by Nike Shoes, the Fighting Sue, the White House Christmas tree, the White House Christmas card, burning the Quran, apologizing for burning the Quran, Don Imus, Tracy Morgan, Gilbert Gottfried, Ashton Kutcher, and the ESPN who used the wrong Chinese cliché for Jeremy Lin after everyone else used all the others.”

Maher asked that viewers and Americans who see something that offends them in the media just go on with their lives. Would that not be easier than wasting all the time and energy people have put into acting outraged and hurt and that other people put into crafting their PR-representative-written, insincere apologies.
