APTOPIX Japan Daily Life
CREDIT: AP Photo/Koji Sasahara Eleven people have died and more than a thousand taken by ambulance to hospitals during a major heatwave in Japan this weekend. Almost 1,900 people were hospitalized in Japan on Saturday, the county’s hottest day so far this year. Fifteen of those people remained seriously ill on Sunday. Fourteen cities broke heat records in Japan, with the city of Higashiomi reaching a record-breaking 38.8° C (101.8° F) and more than a quarter of observation points across the nation recorded temperatures of 95° or higher. The high temperatures prompted Japan’s weather service to issue heatwave advisories for 41 of the country’s 47 prefectures, or government districts. Japan’s current heatwave comes almost a year after another historic heatwave kill...

By Tom BoggioniMonday, July 28, 2014 9:31 EDT   TweetFormer Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, whose media presence has ebbed and flowed since resigning her Alaskan governorship five years ago, has announced the launch of her own online news channel called, unsurprisingly, the Sarah Palin Channel. According to The Daily Variety, the  fledgling news network will be subscription-based, costing $9.95 per month or $99.95 for a one-year subscription. Active military personnel will be allo...

REUTERS DO NOT REUSE
By ReutersMonday, July 28, 2014 9:31 EDT   TweetBy Zachary Fagenson MIAMI (Reuters) – As construction cranes crowd the coastline and developers strive to lure wealthy international buyers with brand name towers and lavish amenities, there are signs Miami’s latest condo boom has begun to slow and a possible oversupply could temper record prices. Since mid-2011, some 175 towers with more than 27,000 units have been proposed in Miami, says real estate analyst Peter Zalewski of CondoVultures. Florida l...

Casey Stegall was fired from his childcare job for having a same-sex partner.
Casey Stegall was fired from his childcare job for having a same-sex partner. CREDIT: Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Casey Stegall had worked for a full year at the Children’s Home of Lubbock, Texas and received only positive feedback for his work with the kids who were staying there. His supervisors at the Christian-run organization knew he was gay, but after he introduced his fiancé to some of the teenagers during a Fourth of July trip to a water park, he was promptly fired. The termination was perfectly legal. According to Lynn Harms, president of the organization, “There is a set of biblical values that we adhere to live by. When you are implementing life training and so forth — particularly with children — to put a confused message out there is counterproductive.” Harms ...

A FoxNews.com article asserted that undocumented immigrants protesting outside the White House were given "a pass" from being arrested by immigration officials who prioritize apprehensions and deportations for more serious offenders. Immigration officials argue that targeting peaceful immigrants would divert limited federal resources from its focus on criminal offenders.  A July 28 FoxNews.com article criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) policy on the prioritization of deportation after undocumented immigrants protested outside of the White House were not apprehended and deported. Despite being told by ICE officials that "the agency prioritizes deportation for felons," Fox dismissed the policy describing it as "a pass to other undocumented residents": Illegal immigrant d...

Veteran
CREDIT: Shutterstock Just a few days before Congress breaks for a five week recess, lawmakers have finally reached a deal on a legislative package intended to reform a veterans health program that has been plagued with controversy for months. House and Senate negotiators say that the proposed reforms will help eliminate the backlog of veterans who have been forced to wait too long to receive medical care. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL) will unveil the legislation at a news conference on Monday afternoon. The Associated Press reports that their plan is expected to “authorize billions in emergency spending to lease 27 new clinics, hire more doctors and nurses and make it easier for veterans who can’t get prompt appointments with VA doctors to obtain outsi...

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)
MCALLEN, TEXAS — Outside a sterile City Hall fringed by the town’s historical artifacts, McAllen Mayor Jim Darling walks at a brisk pace with his communications director leading five paces ahead of him. His face is marked with worry as it had been for just about every day for the past two months, if not longer. Darling had just come out from a roundtable discussion with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and border town mayors, and he looked concerned. Darling’s city, less than ten miles from the Mexican border, had become ground zero for the unaccompanied child migrant crisis and he had become the public face for a nation sharply divided not just on the semantics of calling these children “refugees” or “alien minors,” but also the...

When Blue America weighs the pros and cons of endorsing a candidate for Congress, we often find ourselves measuring them by how similar he or she appears to be to Orlando Congressman Alan Grayson. Grayson is brilliant, courageous and, more than anyone else in the House, he defines progressivism. And you know what? One Congressman can matter. A lot-- that's why we're asking you to consider making a contribution to Grayson's reelection campaign today. You've probably heard that Grayson passed more amendments than any other member of Congress. You've probably heard that he helped pass the first Federal media shield bill through the U.S. House of Representatives. But you probably haven't heard that he exposed a plot by the banks to form their own war council with a bunch of three letter agenci...

Close up portrait of cool brunette showing rock on gesture on shutterstock
By Scott KaufmanMonday, July 28, 2014 8:52 EDT   TweetIn a statement, the Satanic Temple said that it will use the Supreme Court’s recent Hobby Lobby decision to exempt its believers from state-mandated informed consent laws that require women considering abortions to read pro-life material. Informed consent or “right to know” laws state that women seeking elective abortions be provided with information about alternatives to the procedure, often couched in language that attempts to personify the fe...

Apollo the dog shot by police (Facebook)
By David EdwardsMonday, July 28, 2014 8:41 EDT   TweetPolice in Illinois promised a full investigation over the weekend after a Chicago-area officer shot a family’s dog in the head as its 6-year-old owner watched. Mother Nicole Echlin told WMAQ that their 1-year-old shepherd-mix Apollo escaped on Friday, and the family was returning home just as officers from the Hometown Police Department were arriving. “We were in the lawn and the cop already had his gun out,” Echlin explained. “I tried to call...

By Tom BoggioniMonday, July 28, 2014 8:01 EDT   TweetOn the most recent Last Week Tonight on HBO, host John Oliver took up the very important, but much ignored, topic of America’s aging nuclear arsenal. Pointing out that, despite cut backs in our nuclear arsenal, America still maintains 4,804 nuclear warhead...

Ukraine Soviet WWI poster AFP
By Agence France-PresseMonday, July 28, 2014 7:05 EDT   TweetPro-Russian rebels in east Ukraine are turning to Soviet World War II posters to spread their message of fighting against Ukrainian “fascists” in a part of the world that was flattened by Nazi troops. “The Motherland Calls!” read one billboard accompanied by a vintage print of a stern-looking Soviet woman against a background of bayonets — jarring next to garish adverts for phone operators, vacuum cleaners and bikinis. Dozens of posters h...

Vietnam cat eating
By Agence France-PresseMonday, July 28, 2014 6:58 EDT   TweetThe enduring popularity of “little tiger” as a snack to accompany a beer in Vietnam means that cat owners live in constant fear of animal snatchers, despite an official ban. At an unassuming restaurant next to a carwash in central Hanoi, a cat is prepared for hungry clients: drowned, shaved and burned to remove all fur before being cut up and fried with garlic. “A lot of people eat cat meat. It’s a novelty. They want to try it,” said the ...

Plane crash Florida beach
By ReutersMonday, July 28, 2014 6:21 EDT   TweetA man was killed and his daughter injured on Sunday when a small plane crash-landed on a Florida beach, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said. The pilot of the single-engine Piper Cherokee had placed a distress call to Venice airport on Florida’s west coast around 2:45 p.m. local time, officials said. Soon after, the plane crash-landed on a nearby beach. A beachgoer from Georgia, Ommy Irizarry, 36, was killed and his 9-year-old daughter, Oceana, w...

The Wall Street Journal took a stand against fair treatment for pregnant workers, complaining that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) new guidelines designed to fight pregnancy discrimination despite conservative Supreme Court opinions holding discrimination against pregnant women is not sex discrimination was a "radical" reading of federal law. Last week, the EEOC issued new guidelines to employers in an effort to curb increasing incidents of pregnancy discrimination in the workplace -- the first time in 30 years the agency had updated its guidelines regarding fair treatment of pregnant employees. One of these new guidelines interpreted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to include reasonable accommodations for "pregnancy-related impairments," which can include se...

Rush Limbaugh accused President Obama of refusing to rebuke the practice of female genital mutilation while speaking to a group of young African leaders, cherry-picking from his remarks to mischaracterize Obama's very clear condemnation of the practice as a "barbaric" tradition that "needs to be eliminated." President Obama spoke on Monday at a town-hall-style meeting honoring the Washington Fellowship For Young African Leaders, urging guests to abandon oppressive traditions, such as female genital mutilation and polygamy, in favor of progress. Cherry-picking from Obama's remarks, Rush Limbaugh accused the president of refusing to condemn the practice of female genital mutilation on the July 28 edition of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show. Limbaugh claimed Obama only halfhear...

Right-wing media and Republicans are blaming Democrats and President Obama for allegedly "ginning up" the issue of impeachment for political benefit, but that Pandora's Box was opened by conservatives themselves, who have been demanding impeachment since Obama first took office. In an interview with conspiracy website WND (which has its own "Impeachment Store"), Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) told conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi that President Obama "wants us to impeach him now" because "his senior advisors believe that is the only chance the Democratic Party has to avoid a major electoral defeat. Evidently Obama believes impeachment could motivate the Democratic Party base to come out and vote." Stockman's proclamation that the president is "begging to be impeached" was quickly trumpeted as ...
